The science behind happy, long-lasting relationships

Despite what modern dating apps would have you believe, when it comes to finding love online, the best way isn’t to offer you endless options to narrow down your dates. Or generating a random mathematical algorithm with built-in Machine Learning of your partner preferences.

No- we are living, breathing creatures whose deepest whims, fancies, fears, and desires cannot be quantified by data science. The things we want are very often not the things we need.

Think about it: we know that sugar is bad for us, yet most of us still consume it on a daily basis. What does that say about the danger of letting us choose whatever we want without there being any caveat or guidance?

So how can we achieve our goal of making happy, long-lasting relationships attainable for everyone?

We decided to delve deep into the fields of Relationship Science and Psychology for a solution, turning to the vast body of existing research and literature on the factors that contribute to successful relationships.

What resulted from the research was our compatibility algorithm- a complex system that calculates your percentage compatibility with each member by assessing:

  • Your personality compatibility
  • Your values ( religion, views on marriage, views on children)
  • Your individual and shared interests

With our compatibility percentage, you now have something that helps to take the guess-work out of your online dating process.

Meet Khloee, our Palate Personality Decoder

“Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are”

– Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

From the time you wake up in the morning till you go to sleep at night, you are making hundreds of decisions throughout the day- consciously and unconsciously. What colour should my tie be? Which task should I complete at work today? What shall I watch on Netflix? Of the hundreds of micro decisions that your brain is zipping through each day, none of them are as emotionally-linked and as personal as your decisions about food and meals.

You may or may not have a strong opinion about the polyester content in your clothes. If you’re not a fan of classical music, it might not make any difference to you whether Bach or Liszt is playing in the elevator.

Long table of friends enjoying a group conversation over food and wine

Yet you may, within the first mouthful of tasting durian, vegemite, or blue cheese, decide instantly that you hate it. You like your coffee a certain way, you don’t like it when your food is cooked a certain way. You may love soggy fries or you may hate it. And you will most certainly have an opinion on which is, in your view, the best Italian/Indian/Chinese/XYZ cuisine restaurant where you live.

There must have been a reason why, as a civilisation, we have habitually used ‘breakfast’, ‘lunch’, and ‘dinner’ as milestones to mark the passing of each day. Every meal is, in itself, a sort of occasion or chance for us to take a break- where we disengage from our thinking self to pay attention to our primal self. And yet, very few people actually realise that their taste preferences and eating habits are inextricably intertwined with their personality.

Over the past 5 years, we paid attention to people’s eating habits and conducted our own exploration into the link between palate preference and personality. The results were astonishing- so much so that we were able to obtain over 85% in profiling someone just by asking 20 simple questions about their food preferences (even if we have never met this person before).
